Abysmal performace in gmat.. need help

by janaki » Tue Jan 05, 2010 9:06 am
Hi,
I gave my gmat on 23rd of dec and ended up getting a miserable score of 570 (Q47,V23). never have i got such a low mark in my practice tests..My AWA went fine.. next the quant section was doable.. the verbal was pretty tough. I wasnt able to decipher a pattern in Sc questions.. This has never happened in any of my practice test.. I was totally shocked and lost my confidence. CR and RC was also tough. I was just able to narrow down to 2 choices in CR and then got stuck up with it..
Planning to giv my gmat again in feb. I think verbal is my greatest weakness.. Im gonna do 1000sc, OG 10th,11th and 12th edition again for verbal.. planning to review manhattan Sc guide again.. I hope this will help me. Please advice if im going in the right direction. It wud be great if someone can share their preparation strategies.

Think positively. Now you know that what your weakness are. Also, never make a habbit of talking at high level or using broad term because these habbits are also a bit responsible, in my opinion, for not passing the level of 700. You just said that "verbal" is my greatest weakness. Change this habbit and say RC or SC or Scientific passage in RC or replacing modfiers in SC is my weakness. More specific and accurate diagnosis you will do of your weakness areas, more you will see improvement graph rising sharply. We have a habbit of speaking generally and that's why we start working on whole area instead of a microscopic view of wrong questions and weak areas. I am sure there were some questions which you did right in verbal then why you will work on them? Rather you should and probably will work on weak areas. Do a very deep analysis of your verbal sections.
I am a lot weak in verbal but I also did a lot of questions right in RC except few Geology, Biology and physics related passages where one experiment was in the center of whole passage and at least 5 terms of various chemical substance were involved. So this is the area of focus for me instead of whole RC section. I will focus on those scientific passages.
