ending in a preposition

Looking through some examples in the Manhattan SC review, I'm having trouble understanding how does one recognize when to end in a phrase such as "does" or "did" is the correct way to end, as in the following examples:

Given Incorrect Sentence: Julia was able to climb the tree so fast as her brothers.
Corrected: Julia was able to climb the tree as fast as her brothers did.

Given Incorrect Sentence: The blue dress looks more flattering on you than the red one.
Corrected: The blue dress looks more flattering on you than the red one does.

SC is turning out to the most difficult for me.

In the 1st sentence the tense is in past tense...Julia was ...indicates that a past tense is required and so a DID is needed in this context whereas in the 2nd sentence it says.....the blue dress LOOKS...blah blah....here since the tense is present DOES is required...

Rule - Does/Did/Do agree with the OBJECT and NOT SUBJECT...

Amit sings well as his sister DOES
Amit sings well as his friends DO
Amit sang well as the group DID
