Assuming that there's nothing in fruit except for the fruit and water, if fresh fruit is 72% water, then it's 28% fruit; if dried fruit is 20% water, then it's 80% fruit. So, we can set up the ratio:

28/80= x/100

28/80 * 100/1 = x

7/20 * 100/1 = x

700/20 = x

35 = x

100 Fresh Fruit-Strictly it should have 72 lb Water and 28 lb Fruit according to the Qn.

Eliminate all choices with Fruit less than 28.

Now in Dry fruit the ratio is W/F=20/80=1/4

So for every 4 lb of Fruit 1lb is water

Therefore the Total Dry fruit from 100lb =28+28/4 * 1
=28+7
=35

Hi Stuart,

Won't you consider the water content ratio while solving ? You obtained the fruit ratio ( by subtracting water content) from the problem, but 100 pounds of fresh fruit also constitutes water content. I didnt understand the solution .

I hope to make it simpler,
100 pounds of fresh fruit gives 28 pounds of dry fruit - water(20%) so that means 28 pounds of fruit = 80% of some dry fruit quantity not 100% right?
[28 = 80% * fruit ]+ water = actual dry fruit, so find quantity of fruit + water [I hope its clear now Viju ]
