Please help with my profile

by rajmd1989 » Mon Nov 23, 2009 6:26 am
Hey guys

I have just graduated from my TY (15th class) with a score of 84% and have gotten 86% in 10th and 78% in 12th class respectively.

I was also the Chairman of a festival at my college and lead a team of over 540 people (college students) to organise the festival which saw 35000 people attending it.

I am also in to music and have been drumming for over 12 years now and also have composed music for a few ads and plays.

Apart from the above i dont have any work expereince. Also i am an Indian and have studied completely in India.

I wanted to ask the following questions:

1) With the exsisting profile what do i need to do in order to have a good chance of getting in to a top B-school (Harvard, Wharton,SAtanford, Kellog being the ones i am interested in)? Please comment in terms of GMAT score, work experience to be gained etc.

2) How important will be work experience in my case and what should be the average time period and job profile?

3) How do i highlight the points mentioned above to get it to the notice of the admission commitee?

Please help me out on this. I am very confused and really want to get in to the top 20 B-school.

Thanks in advance.

Firstly, hats off for looking ahead. It is wise to set some short and long term plans when targeting top b-schools. You'd be suprised at how many applicants back into going to b-school, so you have a distinct advantage in targeting your approach. To answer your questions:

1) With the exsisting profile what do i need to do in order to have a good chance of getting in to a top B-school (Harvard, Wharton,SAtanford, Kellog being the ones i am interested in)? Please comment in terms of GMAT score, work experience to be gained etc.

All top b-schools are looking for leadership potential and demonstrated leadership or leader-like accomplishments at work. Challenge yourself to work somewhere you will gain valuable exposure to your target industry and don't back down from difficult assignments which will provide you with opportunities to excel and rack up good stories to tell an admissions committee. They will also be looking for maturity, so come armed with a clear vision of why you need the MBA, and where you plan to go with it. The other two pillars of a good application will contain evidence of teamwork, and innovation, both of which you should seek out in your professional experience. Good GMAT never hurts and will only complement your high marks in school.

2) How important will be work experience in my case and what should be the average time period and job profile? Nowadays, average work experience at top schools is about 5 years, but there are no hard and fast rules about it. The key is presenting a memorable and impressive application package.

3) How do i highlight the points mentioned above to get it to the notice of the admission commitee? Write killer essays that tell a story and make an irrefutable case for admission!

Just a little doubt about work experience. What kind of jobs profiles should I look at ?
