Weekend MBA

by mbaaspirant2007 » Thu Sep 13, 2007 5:22 pm
Stacy,
I would appreciate if you could provide input/feedback on my chances to get into part time MBA. I am targeting the weekend MBA programs at GSB -Univ. of Chicago and Kellogg

My background:
I am 30 years old. I have a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin GPA 3.8/4.0.
Received -Academic Competency scholarship
2-years work exp. part time as a Graduate Research Assistant
Academic Honor societies-Phi Kappa Phi and Omega Rho

Undergraduate degree in Engineering with Honors from Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) GPA 3.4/4.0

I have a total work experience of 6 years in various companies(Steel, Machinery, Consulting) and am currently working as a 6 Sigma Black Belt in a Fortune 100 Manufacturing Company and in addition i was given some honorary roles/responsibilities.I have a very strong quantitative background.
I am expecting good recommendations from my workplace

I have one Technical Paper, published in a Mechanical Engineering Journal and have 2 Patents filed on my behalf through the company that i currently work for.

GMAT: 660 (84percentile)
Quant 50 (95 percentile)
Verbal 30 (57 percentile)
AWA of 5.5 (83 percentile)

on the Verbal i used to score well during practice exams...however, things went a bit different on the test.

Extra curriculars: I am a member of professional organization such as APICS etc. and I was part of National Social Service organization, when i was as undergrad. I am well read and am active in sports.

My verbal score is not upto the mark, however, i am hoping or thing that my quant. score(50), AWA score(5.5) , work experience, GPA and recommendations might compensate ?

How good are my chances for getting into the weekend MBA program at GSB- Chicago or Kellogg ?

Any other advice that you could provide to make my case stronger would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi mbaaspirant2007,

The part time programs are less competitive in terms of academics, but more competitive in terms of strong work experience. It sounds like you are doing well at work and are well respected, if you can communicate your strong management potential and leadership at work you can make a good case for your candidacy. You do have a lack of strong extracurriculars, so that is the other area you may want to address.

Good luck!
