IT industry - Job role vs title

by momentary_lapse » Wed Sep 12, 2007 11:25 am
Amy,

In the IT field, people have different roles while their title may be the same.

For ex: I am functioning at the client's site as Manager of my team through my title is Senior COnsultant.

My manager in his recommendation and otherwise, calls me the project manager of the team as does the client.

However in the MBA apps, they ask for the job title. Senior Consultant doesnt sound the same as a manager.

Also in my job description essays, I have written about my management experience.

Wouldnt it be confusing for the person reading the essays and recos vs the application questions ? How does on reconcile this?

thanks in advance

Hi momentary_lapse,

I think it's a very common issue that your official "HR approved" title is different from the title that your manager may call you, or the job that you may perform.

I would suggest using the same title that your boss would call you for your essays and your job experience on the application. There will be a background check when you are accepted, but they allow for normal variances in titles. If you were claiming to be a vice president when you are a manager, that would be a problem, but as long as the titles are at the same level, it should be fine.

Good luck!
