"jargon" in this forum..

by eric68508 » Thu Nov 05, 2009 1:30 am
I found that lots of people uses the words like "have a shot","reasonable reach","match","safe" to decribe the chance of admission.

However, how should I transfer these words into percentage?(For example: reasonable reach mean <10%,safe mean >80%???)

I know that it is very difficult to transfer the words into number like that. But I think a rough transfer is still useful for me.

Thank you

Since the jargon used on this forum is far from scientific, it is impossible to assign actual percentages to the terms. Each person who uses the terminology may have a slightly different meaning in mind. That said, here is my interpretation of the jargon and what I mean when I use it:

-"have a shot"/"reasonable reach" means there are many other similarly qualified applicants and your acceptance really depends on what the rest of the pool looks like in your particular round as well as the overall strength of your application package
-"match" means your profile meets the quantitative qualifications but again the application package is your main marketing mechanism and can make or break even a well qualified applicant
-"safe" means that you have a higher than average GMAT, GPA, and # years WE than the typical applicant and you will more than likely get accepted if you submit a solid application.

Hope this helps. Also, keep in mind that individuals on this forum can only provide their opinions and cannot give you a definite answer on whether or not you will be accepted to any given program.
