Hi,
How I can calculate and solve it quickly?
If there is any short-cut or mathematical trick to solve such problem, please share key trick with me.

3/4>1/2>17/24>9/16>3/8
so the middle no is 17/24
OA pls?
It does not matter how many times you get knocked down , but how many times you get up

Alternatively, you can look at the numbers and check their relative value, i.e. compare them
1/2 is a good start. 3/8 is smaller than 1/2. 3/4 is bigger and 17/24 is roughly equal to 3/4.
9/16 is only slightly bigger than 1/2, making it smaller than 3/4 and 17/24

yes, find a common denominator , in this case it is 48,
you have here, from greatest to least: 36/48, 34/48,27/48, 24/48, 18/48,
middle one is 27/48 = 9/16 E

i got utterly defeated by the gmat.

sorry im probably a noob for asking this: what does IMO stand for???
i got utterly defeated by the gmat.
Answer should be E.
In terms of shortcuts, I converted everything to decimal form in a rough estimate kind of way:
17/24 - I know that 16/24 = 2/3 = .666, so 17/24 is a little more than that.
1/2 - 0.5
3/8 - I know this is equal to 0.375, but another way to think of it is 2/8 = 1/4 = 0.25, and 4/8 = 0.5, that means 3/8 is right in between, which is the average of the two.
9/16 - 8/16 = 0.50, so 9/16 is a little more than that.
3/4 - 0.75
Now just line it up from greatest to least:
3/4,17/24,9/16,1/2,3/8. Middle one is 9/16
