20 yr old needing words of wisdom!!

by uzzy724 » Sat Oct 10, 2009 1:31 pm
Hi everybody!!!!

I'm a final year undergraduate student studing BSc Mathematics at University College London (UCL) and planning to apply to LSE, Princeton and MIT to their Masters in finance programs.

I have one internship at a small investment bank in Dubai and I am a part-time mathematics tutor. I'm only 20 years of age so my work experiences are limited

I do various extra curricular activities, probably my most outstanding acheivement would be that i'v played cricket at an international level.

My A level grades were 'A' maths, 'A' further maths, 'B' economics and 'B' Biology. I'm currently achieving a high second class degree 69% and am on course to acheive a first class degree. That probably would be translated as a 3.5-4.0 GPA

I recently took my GMAT and got a 670 49Q/32V and 5.0 for AWA. I was very dissapointed with my score and am going to retake it in the near future.

I'd really appreciate any feed back from current M.Fin students, prospective students and consultants.

Some of the questions on my mind are:

How gd is my GMAT score?
Do I need more work experience?
What are my chances of getting in so far?
Since recently my university was ranked higher than the ones i'm applying, will this give me an advantage?

Thanks alot for reading my post, hope to hear back from all of you soon !! :)

I wish more people got their early wake up call like you! Congratulations on reaching out early in the game!

Usually, your 'age' is not asked during the interview. However, your 'age' is guessed based on your resume and work experience. (Asking your age would ideally be considered an illegal question). :)
Good work on the internship. I like that you studied somewhere else and went for internship somewhere else. Good Job! A dynamic resume is important.
I do various extra curricular activities, probably my most outstanding acheivement would be that i'v played cricket at an international level.
Great! Can someone vouch for this? Additionally, if you had a coach, he'll need to shed some light whether you were a team player etc. If you have a good coach or captain - I'd highly recommend that you keep in touch with him/her. They can write your letter of recommendation when your time is 'right'. Additionally, make sure that he/she is your well wisher!

Yes - you will need at least a 3.5 - 4.0 GPA in order to get into good B-schools.

You need to push your GMAT score to at least a 720+ in order to even qualify for a good B-school.

For finance information - please check your personal inbox. I've provided information additional information.

Some of the questions on my mind are:
How gd is my GMAT score?
I've answered that one for you.
Do I need more work experience?
In months and years - how much work experience do you have as of now? This is unclear from the above information.
What are my chances of getting in so far?
Getting where? MS finance or Bschool?
Since recently my university was ranked higher than the ones i'm applying, will this give me an advantage?
Little bit - not a whole lot. They look at you as an individual more than anything.

I've equipped you with further information in your private message. Check it and directly email me if you have further questions. The essay submission season has started - so I get pretty caught up with my candidates.

Good Luck and keep up with the motivation level! :)

Hi Sophia!!!

Thank you for the prompt reply!!

Unfortunetly I haven't received your masters information email!!

I'm really looking forward to going to do my masters and I was right to be concerned of my GMAT score... hopefully a gd grade will make up for my limited work experience.

I don't know if I'll be able to get my coaches to vouch for my cricket because I played for Bahrain (a country in th middle east) . Btw Will it make a difference if I mention that iv lived in many different countries?

My work experience consists of a month at a regional investment bank in dubai as an intern in their research equity dept and a year at a tuition centre as a part time mathematics and science tutor. I still tutor mathematics but privately now.

I'm interested in knowing whether I should take the GRE so I can apply to sum of the financial engineering courses at top unis in the states?!?

I look forward to hearing back from you very soon....everyone else is welcome to comment aswell!!!
