How to select the appropriate MBA course?

by ebakeev » Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:17 am
Hello, everybody,
This is my first topic and would like to say that it is great that such a forum exists!
I am still in the process of choosing my MBA course and would like some advice from you.
First of all is my background: I have PhD in Civil Engineering, MSc in Environmental Science and Policy and another MSc in Civil Engineering. I also have 6 years of work experience as a Civil Engineer. The main reasons I want to do MBA are for a higher salary and more interesting job, anyway now my work is almost 100% managerial.
I want to do MBA in the UK mainly because my family is here. Also, I believe it is going to be easier to finance my studies here than abroad.
I am not sure only where to study. I looked at various rankings of UK MBA courses, but I did not find ranking tailored for candidates with engineering background though I read that about third of MBA students are engineers on some courses.
Therefore, I have a choice - apply for MBA course related to construction in less ranking MBA schools, or do more general MBA in higher ranking schools. I was advised that salaries after graduating from lower ranking MBA schools are not as high as from the top ones, but I was also told that I worked as an engineer for too long that it would be difficult to do a career change. What would be your advice?
So far my list is the following:
For general MBA and top ranking courses:
1. London Business School - high ranking, I will get good connections after graduation
2. Oxford Said - the same story
3. Cass Business School
4. Cranfield school of management
5. Lancaster University Management School,
6. Aston Business School,
7. Ashridge Business School
For engineers:
1. Manchester Business School
2. Westminster University MBA
Thanks
