The argument that the previous summer's massive increase in tourism will result in an economic boom omits important information that must be addressed in order to substantiate this argument. The later statement seems to indicate that increased tourism will solve the area's economic problems but does not take into consideration all factors relating to tourisms and the general area. Therefore the argument is not effective because it relies on certain assumptions.
Firstly, this argument assumes that increased tourism will generate more business in this stagment area. However, we do not know if the 500% increase in tourism last year was the highest level that this area can sustain. Can hotels and motels accomodate a larger influx of people? Are there enough shops, vendors, restaurants and other attractions in this area? During this difficult economic time, many shops and restaurants could have closed. An increase in tourism after business has closed shop will not bring those same businesses back. It will also not generate record revenues because there are less places to spend money.
This argument assumes that a favorable national economic situation will bring in more people to this resort. However, what if this resort is designed to accommodate lower to middle class families. An increase in spending power could result in fewer people choosing to vacation at this lower class resort and upgrade to a more upscale resort. Lastly, we do not know why the area is still having economic difficulties dispite a 500% increase in tourism last year. Perhaps only 10 people vacationed in the area last year. A 500% increase of 10 people would not be nearly as significant as a 500% of 1000 people.
