Is y an integer

by uptowngirl92 » Sun Oct 04, 2009 3:24 am
x^2+5y=49 .Is y an integer?
1. 1<x<4
2. X^2 is an integer

Stmt 1 insuff. We dont know whether x is an integer or not.
Stmt 2 insuff.
Combined:
If x^2 is an integer,then x is an integer.Poss values of x=2,3 which makes y an integer.IMO C.

Say x^2 = 10, which is an integer. Is x an integer? No. I believe this is a common and classic illusion.

IMO E

x^2+5y=49 .Is y an integer?
1. 1<x<4
2. X^2 is an integer

1&2

X^2 can be any integer > 1 & less than 16. Pick numbers (say X^2 = 3 or 4 - note that question never says x is an integer) and solve the equation. We get Yes & No answers for Y.
