(A) A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, --> which refers to periwrinkle. Wrong
(B) A derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, of the Madagascar periwinkle, --> It makes the sentence look like derivative is cultivated in China. WRONG
(C) A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, --> Again it makes the sentence look like that the derivative is cultivated in China. WRONG.
(D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that --> "that" doesn't have any particular reference. WRONG.
(E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,--> CORRECT
E IMO. OA please.

I think the original sentence suggests that the derivative and not Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China, so whats problem with C?

How do you infer from original sentence that Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China?

I think that Madagascar periwrinkle should be cultivated.
See, the sentence means, a substance derived from Madagascar periwrinkle is useful. And let's suppose something is cultivated. Now, a derivative is coming from "something" so it can not be cultivated.
Logically, Madagascar periwrinkle is being cultivated here and the derivative is used by people.
Did I explain it properly? :?

Yes u have explained it nice. :)
I have doubt because the subject of sentence is derivative and the fragment between commas acts as modifier for Madagascar periwrinkle and thus grammatically derivative should be cultivated but logically(as u said) Madagascar periwrinkle should be.
