Tier of Undergraduate School

by EMAN » Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:51 pm
I would imagine this question has been addressed before, however, I still would like to ask how much of an effect on the type of undergraduate school one attended has on their MBA application. I have heard expert opinions going both ways.

Having completed my undergraduate studies at a medium sized state school (probably not too well known out of the region), would I ever have to justify why I did not go to larger, more renowned university? I mean if the general consensus is that it matters more of what you made of your experience, I guess I am not too concerned given my background, but occassionally I when I read consultants responses here I get the impression this is not necessarily the case per se.

Student Profiles

By the way I wanted to add that when I look at the student profiles some of the top programs feature on their websites, many seem to have went to schools in the upper tier.

You definitely do not have to go to a top undergraduate school to get into a top MBA program. The important thing is that you position yourself well as an applicant outside of the top program - because that will be your niche competition.
