"Perceived as" vs. "Perceived to be"

I just read a GMAT Prep 1 RC passage with "perceived to be". Should I encounter the word perceive in a SC question, what is the proper application? Is it
1. Perceived as or
2. Perceived to be

One tip is to avoid "to be" and "being". I would go with "AS"

I have come across things that are correct too, but GMAT prefers certain styles and they are in love with the word "AS". There is no other explanation.

I don't remember other examples now, otherwise I would give a few.

For example, they say never use "hopefully" although you can use any word like "probably", "historically", ....etc ????????

Yeah, honestly they're both fine as far as I know. I wish I could be more help here, but the only thing I can say is that if they both appeared in SC choices, there would probably be some other grammatical discrepancy there to rule one of them out. Sorry.

Hi, received a PM asking me to respond. I have been traveling and haven't been on BTG for several weeks. Sorry I haven't replied yet.

Both idioms are allowed in general usage, but I'm not sure what the official GMAT stance is. I'm looking into it.

I will mention that, just because something is used in CR or RC does NOT mean that it would be okay for SC. Annoyingly, we've found multiple instances of idioms that were called "incorrect" in an SC explanation nevertheless used in RC and CR passages.

Talked to our SC guru. He hasn't done a thorough survey of OG12 on this particular issue, but he does know that OG11 did not contain a single problem that hinged on this issue. Further, while he thinks there are some subtle differences in accepted usage between the two (in terms of when to use each), he thinks the differences are so subtle that they would not be tested on the GMAT.
