Should I write an optional essay to address my GPA?

I am applying to Columbia and was wondering whether it was necessary for me to address my lower than average GPA. I went to Carnegie Mellon for 1 year with a GPA of 3.5. I then transferred to Penn State and graduated with a BS in Computer Science and a GPA of 3.1. On average, taking into account both Carnegie Mellon and Penn State, my GPA averages out to around a 3.2 or 3.3. Do you believe that I should address my low GPA in an optional essay? Or is it not necessary? I have listed below some other key info about my background and experience that may be helpful for you to consider. Thanks everyone!

- Attended Carnegie Mellon for 1 Year (3.5 GPA)
- Transferred to Penn State and graduated with BS in Computer Science (3.1 GPA)
- GMAT Score: 720 (48 Math, 40 Verbal)
- Work Experience: 2 yrs banking at Merrill, 3 years emerging markets private equity experience.

It all depends on the reasons for your below average GPA. If I was the AdCom, I'd be curious as to why your GPA dropped that much after you transferred schools. So if you were just plain lazy, then that wouldn't make the best optional essay. However, if there were any family problems (e.g. illness of a parent) or any other special circumstances then it would make sense to explain this.

Where are you planning on applying? Your GMAT might offset your low GPA for top 20 schools.

I am planning on applying Columbia, Wharton, Darden, Tuck, NYU and Haas. My other thought was that they may adjust my GPA upward since Computer Science is an academically rigorous major.

That may be true that CS is a tough degree, however, even with some "adjustment" your GPA would still be quite below average. I think they may also use the fact that you have a CS degree to take a better look at your GMAT, e.g. making sure your verbal part is ok.

The schools you mention are quite competitive, but remember that academics (GPA and GMAT) are only 1 part of the application. If your work experience, letters of recommendation, essays, etc. are strong then you can make it into any school!

Homeyg - In your case, I would say - ABSOLUTELY! Please take the opportunity to write the optional essay and provide a good explanation.

First of all, Schools like Columbia could possibility wait list you just for this reason.

Secondly, you definitely have a good GMAT score and work experience is from a good place. However, the low GPA doesn't add up in the equation. So you are better off acknowledging and providing a good explanation.

Thirdly, your resume does not give you a chance to explain the 'why' behind the low scores - that is another reason why you need to fill this gap up.

Thirdly, schools usually do not take the 'average' GPA. The GPA you had when you graduated from the last school that gave you your official degree - that is usually considered your final GPA. You are better off - if you come out and admit that you have a comparatively low GPA it looks better than trying to 'hide' it or not address it or ignore it all together.

Admissions committee is usually very careful about these things. Be honest - come out straight up front and explain why was it a learning experience for you and how did it help you develop / strengthen your character.
