560 V 25 Q 42 GPA 3.6 Florida International

by ggsol » Tue Sep 01, 2009 10:52 am
Hi there,

My GMAT score was 560 with V 25 Q 42. My GPA was 3.6 and my degree was in history. My score reflects my desparate studying of math concepts and virtually 0 preparation for verbal.

I tried to retake the GMAT again today after more verbal preparation, but I canceled the scores. I just wasn't with it and after considering my scores and the school that I want to get into my question is should I even bother?

The average score for applicants to this program is 560- with the middle 80% range GMAT scores from 500-640.

I also noticed on FIU's website that the school will take GRE scores. Although I have not taken this test, I would be willing to do so.

I am hoping my strong background in a major which requires heavy writing a good GPA and a decent math score will help me get in, but I am concerned about the low verbal score of 25. This is the minimum score required by the school. Also my writing section was only a 3.5.

I appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Dear ggsol,

I think this is a tough decision and one you will have to make a judgment call on. While your 560 is a good score in relation to FIU as it is at the average, I can see why you are concerned over your verbal and AWA score. You do have the essays and interview to demonstrate your verbal ability, so there will be other evidence of your aptitude in your application. However, these are low scores in the grand scheme for verbal and AWA. If you can retake the GMAT without sacrificing the quality of your essays, then it might be worth it to see if you can improve your score. Worst case scenario is that you apply with your 560 which is not a bad place to be for your FIU application.

Good luck,
Lisa
