Choice between A and D as they are the only choices that maintain parallelism with the first part.

Choosing A over D as you normally don't use return of a year as it cannot come back.

Did

I too was stumped on this question that is from the OG 12. I think did in this instance is superfluous. My initial reaction was to pick A or D as a result of maintaining parallelism. The OG explanation was not very clear.

I would go for D as return of clearly point to sensation.

Return in..when time is specified

by mbadreams » Mon Aug 31, 2009 12:21 pm
Is the answer A? Parallelism is maintained in A as well as the correct use of return in. When a time frame is specified I guess you use return in. This is my understanding. Someone correct me if i am wrong.

The answer choice "C" proves this that:

Most of the time when we use a comparison using"than" or "as" we omit verb comparators, as they are implied.

"He is as depressed as they, but he soldiered onward anyway"

Sounds awkward but this is in the flashcards on this site!

ALso, the same rule for "than":

"He is shorter than she"

NOw, look at this sentence when it appears that a a inanimate is performing actions:

"French wines taste better than Australian wines DO"

Too many rules to remember

:x

Interesting question. I too went for A.

But if the rule states that when we compare with "as" or "than", we do not need to repeat the verb. That emlimates all answer choices except for C & E.

Anyone know the specific rule, (if there is one for), for the usage of return in and return of? Return of here sounds awkward to me.

Even though we are down to C or E, c is parallel "In no other" "As in its return"

Haley's return never before caused such an attention worldwide as it's return in 1910-11 caused/did.

IF you find the above construction correct, then the trick is in Parallesm with "In" in regards to the original question.

Your thoughts please.
