School Research and Career Change

by saegonyoo » Thu Aug 20, 2009 3:15 pm
Hello,
I am applying for 2010 and sincerely appreciate if your can share thoughts on following 2 questions.

1) Besides school websites, BW, U.S News, etc., what resources do you recommend to learn about the true characteristics and culture of a school? I plan on attending class visits and info nites as well. I am thinking of applyng to Foster MBA, USC, BU, and maybe one more.

2) I have econ/acct education with big 4 and some in house consulting experience. I'd like to apply for marketing specialization but i hear it's going to be an uphill battle in both getting into mba and getting a job after. your thoughts?

Thank you.

Dear saegonyoo,

I think the best insight about a program comes from those who have experienced it. Use your school visits to talk to current students about their experience as well as any alumni that might be in attendance. You can also ask the admissions office if there are any alumni in your area that you could contact. You will witness much of the culture and characteristics when you visit a class, but have questions in mind to ask the current students you meet.

2) I have econ/acct education with big 4 and some in house consulting experience. I'd like to apply for marketing specialization but i hear it's going to be an uphill battle in both getting into mba and getting a job after. your thoughts?
I don't agree with marketing being an "uphill battle" for you just because your background is in an accounting firm. Many people go to business school to make a significant career change. The important thing is for you to pick a school with a strong marketing curriculum and a good reputation in the industry you wish to work in post-MBA. Likewise, you will need to put the time into your job search to have a shot at making the change. There are many marketing jobs that are analytical and quantitative in nature, so depending on what type of marketing job you wish to pursue, your background might be an advantage for you.

Best of luck,
Lisa
