GMAT Prep SC Questions

by rishi4you » Sun Aug 23, 2009 9:42 am
In my quest to perfect the SC, i have been working on the GMAT Prep SC questions and tried to put my own understanding of the right and wron answer choice. I wanted to start this thread to get everyone opinion about my reasoning for the right and wrong answer. I am going to add a bunch of questions here and i would request everyone to put forth their reasoning and either agree with my reasoning or prove me wrong This way i may be knowing what i am doing wrong and everyone else could also verify thier SC skills.

Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992 , a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.

a) a greater proportion than it was ---- it does not have an antecedent..television costs is plural.
b) a greater proportion than -- correct
c) a greater proportion than they have been ---- have been signifies some event in the past which continues till present . So in this context the television costs is not something which is high till present day.
d) which is greater than so ---which signifies campaign of 1992
e) which is greater than it has been ---- which signifies campaign of 1992

Todays technology allows manufactures to make small cars more fuel efficient now than at any other time min thier production history .

b)small cars that are more fuel efficient than they were at any other time.

c) small cars that are more fuel efficient than those at any other time in

d)more fuel efficient small cars than those at any other time in their

e) more fuel efficient small cars now than at any time in .

My reasoning:

more than incorrectly compares small cars with "any time "their does not have a clear antecedent.
b) That are is always a wrong construct, they , their does not have a clear antecedent.
c) More than correctly compares small cars to small cars (those)
d) those does not have a proper comparator.
e) More than incorrectly compares production of "small cars now " to any other time.

You said in the reasoning of b "that are is always a wrong construct". However, "that are" is given in C as well and I believe that C is the correct answer. Did you read anywhere that "that are" is always a wrong construct.
