Realize that there are 15 points distributable (5 for 1st, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, 1 for 5th, 0 for 6th-9th).

If 2 teams max out on points, 12 points are taken.

Thus, there are 3 points allocated to the remaining team.

Thanks - the answer is D.

"If 2 teams max out on points, 12 points are taken"

no team has earned more than 6 points meaning max point a team can earn is 5 or 6?? (I thought more than dose not include the number..)

Can anyone clarify?

No team earned more than 6 points. 6 is not more than 6. Thus, it is perfectly acceptable for a team to have earned 6 points.
