(A) and (B) has same problem.
"it" - ambiguous, refers to weakness/hypothesis

(C)
"It" can only refer to a nouun. Need a noun, "hypothesis'" acts as an adjective here.

(D)
Correct

(E) The weakness of the hypothesis which sounds plausible
Unclear "Which". Can refer to either weakness or hypothesis
