What is the value of (a-b)/(b+c)

1. a+b=b-c

2. a/c = -1

1) a+b=b-c
tells us that;

a=-c

replace a in the question

((-c)-b)/(b+c)= -(b+c)/(b+c)=-1

2)a/c=-1
tells us
a=-c

do same thing as 1)

hence D,

or is it one of those trap questions?

But I have a follow up question, Suppose statement 1 and Statement 2 can alone give the ratio but give different answers , lets say 1 and -1.

Then also, would the answer be D ? ... Is that possible on GMAT ?

No, the two statements will never contradict each other.

generallt the two statements in GMAT does not contraidict with one another. However, there is no rule that the answers should be the same.
