MBA in consulting

by priyank12 » Mon Aug 10, 2009 10:31 am
I have a question regarding MBA in consulting. I am an IT guy and want to move to consulting side, but I am a bit unclear about how to justify my current profile to the MBA, I am looking for.....so i want to know what a typical MBA guy from consulting side is expected to do and how can I, a technical IT guy, can justify my profile ?

Hi Priyank,

Thanks for your question. Many people attend business school to change careers, in fact, the two reasons people go to business school are either to change their careers or to grow and enhance the potential in their current career. The fact that you wish to move from IT to consulting won't be anything new to most admissions committees.

The first thing you need to do is refine your goals a bit. Why do you want to make the switch to consulting? What about consulting appeals to you? What type of consulting do you wish to do i.e. IT or strategy? What skills do you have now that you can combine with your MBA to help you succeed in this new career? What companies would you like to work for? Why? All these are questions are meant to help you brainstorm a bit. Once you have the answers to these questions it will be much easier for you to write your "Why MBA" essays as well as explain your desire for a career change in an interview.

Best,

Stacey
