Hi there,

I would like to know how to proceed in order to resolve this SC :

Astronomers have uncovered evidence that a star that was as bright as the full moon exploding into view 340,000 years ago, emitting dazzling radiation that could have disrupted Earth’s protective ozone layer and
sunburned our Stone Age ancestors.

(A) that a star that was as bright as the full moon exploding into view 340,000 years ago, emitting
(B) of a star as bright as the full moon that exploded into view 340,000 years ago and that emitted
(C) of a star that was as bright as the full moon exploding into view 340,000 years ago and that it emitted
(D) that a star as bright as the full moon exploded into view 340,000 years ago, emitting
(E) of a star as bright as the full moon, exploding into view 340,000 years ago and emitting

Astronomers have uncovered evidence that a star that was as bright as the full moon exploding into view 340,000 years ago, emitting dazzling radiation that could have disrupted Earth’s protective ozone layer and sunburned our Stone Age ancestors.

(E) of a star as bright as the full moon, exploding into view 340,000 years ago and emitting
idiom Evidence of - not sure if evidence that is also correct in some other way. This question also checks if subject a start agrees with the rest of sentence that the star explodes into view, and emits .. all past tense.

My first reaction was E, and then B.

E is wrong I realized later because it does not necessarily suggest the star emitted radiation. It could be the moon, not clear.

B has right meaning. Bright star (as bright as moon) exploded and that emitted.[/quote]

IMO D

It has to be D. Check for Parallelism. Sunburned is not underlined and hence, exploded must be there in the answer choice.

B is wrong because it is ambiguous. The parallel template looks something like, that exploded into ... and that emitted ... and sunburned. There should be only one and just before the last parallel element.

Gist: A star exploded emitting light and sunburned our ancestors.

B

parellism "that exploded" and "that emitted." In addition, verb tense congruency; consistent with something happening in past.

stand corrected. d
