The flood

by sbasha » Sat Aug 08, 2009 11:15 am
The flood of home foreclosures that followed the large economic recession in 2008 caused housing prices to drop precipitously, which lead to the writing down of mortgage backed securities, and, to fears of a Great Depression-like downward spiral.

A) which lead to the writing down of mortgage backed securities, and, to fears of a Great Depression-like downward spiral
B) which led to the write downs of mortgage backed securities and fears of a Great Depression-like downward spiral
C) which lead to the write down of mortgage backed securities and the fears of a Great Depression-like downward spiral
D) leading to write downs of mortgage backed securities and fears of a Great Depression-like downward spiral
E) leading to write downs of mortgage backed securities and, fears of a Great Depression-like downward spiral

Can you please throw your views on answer and the difference between D and E.

BTW OA=D

Thanks

immediately i saw that a relative pronoun (i.e. which, that, whom, etc.) is not necessary. relative pronouns relate two subordinate clauses into a complex sentence. and the relative pronoun usually has a direct antecedent, i.e. it comes immediately after noun its reference. E.g. The boy who through the ball, smiled. So eliminate A to C. In E, "and" is never followed by comma. So answer is D.

You got this, man!

I would not agree with the statement that and is never followed by a comma.

It is usually never followed by comma when two entities are present.

But when multiple entities are present, convention is:
A,B,C and, D.

Thanks shahdevine, Madhur,

Maduhr : So this one might be right ?

These kinds of cranky stuff kick me out of the score I need. so if it is the case is it right

The flood of home foreclosures that followed the large economic recession in 2008 caused housing prices to drop precipitously, which lead to the writing down of mortgage backed securities, to concern mortgage brokers and, to fears of a Great Depression-like downward spiral.

Yes, it is right.

But my point is.

A,B,C and , D OR A,B,C and D are both correct.

We should never kick out an answer just because of the placement of comma after and.

I don't agree with Madhur.

I have found the structure correct:

A, B, C, and D.

And as per structure mentioned: A, B, C and, modifier, D. etc. correct
