Low GMAT

by HealthcareMBA » Sun Aug 02, 2009 10:26 am
Took GMAT practice test and scored very low (I'm too ashamed to report it). Taking prep class and would like to improve by 200 points or more.

I have two degrees, BS and MS (from top national university), with GPA 3.4 and 3.9 respectively, and extensive course work in the sciences. I'm hoping this will help off-set the low GMAT. What would be the lowest acceptable GMAT to apply to top MBA schools? I would like to apply to at least one top 10 school and also looking at UNC/UVA range schools.

Also, do adcoms take your current salary into account? I'm already well over six figures. Will adcoms view this as a reflection of advancement in the work place? I don't have management experience, but have a job that requires critical thinking and tons of independent decision making in high pressure situations.

Thanks!

Dear HealthcareMBA,

You want your GMAT score to be in your target schools' mid-80% range at a minimum. If you can get in the mid-50% range, then you are in a much better competitive position. Since your GMAT is only one part of the application, there are a few that receive an admission offer with a GMAT score below the mid-80% range. However, these folks will usually have outstanding applications and a compelling reason to be offered a seat. Depending on how the rest of your application looks, you will want to weigh your application holistically to get the best idea of your chances. Your GPA is at or above average for most programs and you appear to have some good work experience. Your salary does not significantly factor into your evaluation for admission. Most schools ask because publications that do rankings ask for the information and use it as a measure for other parts of the ranking.

Good luck,
Lisa
