OG 12 question

by varunkh70 » Fri Jul 24, 2009 6:48 pm
If [x] denotes the greatest integer less than or equal to x, is [x] = 0?

(1) 5x+1 = 3+2x
(2) 0 < x <1

In the answer explanation its given that [x]=0 implies

0 less than equal x < 1 (how do you type less than equal symbol on this forum??? :roll: )

How did they arrive at this relation?

Another similar question :

If [x] denotes the greatest integer less than or equal to x then is [x]=0?
a) [2x]=0
b0 [3x]=0
[/list]

Note: Here x is not given as an integer but [x] is an integer

Given - [x] denotes the greatest integer less than or equal to x

or [x] <= x

[x] will be = x when x is an integer
[x] will be < x when x is not an integer.

Eg.

If x = 2.2, 2.2, 2.3 ...

as [x] denotes the greatest integer less than or equal to x
=> [x] = 2 in this case

similarly if x=1.1,1.2,1.3 .. [x] will be = 1

Now the qn : is [x] = 0 ?

[x] will be 0 when x = 0 or when x = 0.1,0.2,0.3 ..

i.e [x] will be = 0 when 0 <= x < 1
