I mean you find C correct. But C has many problems

(C) so unrealistic that they have constituted

1. "They" is unnecessary.
2. Parallelism : so X that Y : X and Y have to be parallel

X=unrealistic
Y= they have constituted

Are they Parallel?

Ok.. well the reason why C is incorrect is because of the use of present perfect.
When do you use a present perfect tense? We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now.

Is that what this sentence is trying to say?? Definitely not.

There's only one action that happened in the past i.e. Emperor Augustus commissioned an idealized sculptured portrait. That's it..

The features of the portrait are "STILL" unrealistic.. That is even in the present the features are unrealistic.. and that's the reason there's no point in using a present perfect (have constituted)

Hope it clarifies now.. I don't think there's anything to do with parallelism here or with "they".. they is correctly pointing to "features".. So I really don't see any issues there.. Yes, I would agree that the sentence will not make sense as it non-sensically suggests in D that the features did something.. apart from that there's no issue.
