Baker was perhaps not the most gifted soloist in the orchestra, but the conductor felt what was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by the passion with which he played the music.

IMO - D is the best choice. It is the only answer choice that uses the word "for," i.e. "made up for."

We need to choose what when we know the specific skill he was missing.

Since we do not know the specific skill, whatever is best.

Out of C,D and E

made up for by is the correct idiom. Hence D
