Manhattan GMAT Question...

In the MGMAT SC guide, the following sentence is deemed incorrect:

"Stacey would have gone to the party if she knew about it".

MGMAT says that "if she knew" conveys the meaning that perhaps Stacey DID know about the party.

I am having difficulty grasping this. Can someone pls help.

There is another problem in the above sentence....the antecedent to "it" is not clear.....there is no noun to which "it" refers.

Are u sure that you have taken the sentence from MGMAT...there looks to be another problem in this sentence...the sentence does not seem to follow the below paradigm

if <past tense>, then would/could...
if <past perfect>, then would/could have....

Even to me their explanation is confusing:roll:. However according to me this sentence is a conditional sentence. the clause starting with "if" should be in past perfect tense if the verb in other clause is past participle.

"Stacy would have gone to the party if she had known about it.

or for the clause starting with if to be in past tense then the verb in other clause should be in present tense.

"Stacy would go to the party if she knew about it "

IMO the rule that hemanth is talking about is mentioned in Verb, tense chaper of Manhattan...

The basic rule is:

if <present tense>, [then] <can/will>
if <past tense>, [then] <could/would>
if <past perfect>, [then] <could have/would have>

The correction should be:

Stacey would have gone to the party if she had known about it.

Particularly, this is the past perfect.
