Tektites, which may have been propelled to Earth from lunar volcanoes, are much like the volcanic glass obsidian, but their chemical composition is different than any terrestrial lava; they contain far less water than obsidian does and none of its characteristic microcrystals.

(A) is different than any terrestrial lava; they contain
(B) is different than any terrestrial lava’s, containing
(C) is different from that of any terrestrial lava; they contain
(D) differs from any terrestrial lava in containing
(E) differs from that of any terrestrial lava’s, containing

Danielle (or any Verbal guru); can you please explain the difference between "different from" and "differs from"?

Different from is the correct idiom ...hence C all others have wrong idioms ...

C is the answer because "different from" is the correct idiom.

As for different from and differs from, these are different parts of speech.

"Different from" is an adjective phrase used after the verb (usually is/are/was/etc), i.e. The sun is different from the moon.

"Differs from" is a verb and is used accordingly, i.e. The sun differs from the moon in composition and orbit patterns.

so could it be used as "differs from that of any terrestrial lava, containing" in choice E if there was no "lava's" in E...??

In C, isn't there a pronoun error.."THEY"... "ITS CHARACTERISTIC"?.. or does its refer to the obsidian?

'Its' refers not to tektites but to terrestrial lava/obsidian.

can someone elaborate on why C is the right answer and not E.

In C we use "they" and "its" ...shouldn't it be // none of their characteristic... for option C to be correct.
