What... it really went that well?

I took the GMAT today and did better than I expected.

I was originally shooting for a 760. But all through the test, I was struggling for time.

I couldnt proof read my essays.

I had 15 seconds for the last two questions on the math section, and was even unable to select an option...any option... for the last question.

At this point, I was feeling pretty low half expecting a score of around 680. The verbal questions were ok...not very clear cut but some were easy. The CRs were especially easy thanks to the posts on the forum. The RC was hard at times, but the passages were easy, some very similar, and once almost identical, to ones I had done earlier either online or on the og.

As I clicked next to reach the screen with my score, I actually contemplated canceling my score. I felt stupid that I would receive a low score despite all the effort I had been putting into my preparation.

I ended up seeing a 780 on my screen.... Q 50 (96) and V 46 (99). Pretty cool, eh? Couldn't believe it.... the proctor took a picture of me on his cell phone

But what's really striking to me is the fact that your score is sort of a proof that the average GMAT score is not on the increase, as many have assumed on this forum. This is because in comparing your score with mine I've noticed a few "oddities":
- your quant was 50 - in the 96th percentile; my quant was 50 as well, but mine was in the 94th percentile
- your verbal was 46 - in the 99th percentile; my verbal was 47, still in the 99th percentile.
But overall, you got a higher score, since I got 770. Maybe I'm analyzing this the wrong way, but with my present knowledge of the test, generally the average is lower than it was one month ago.

Perhaps you can reconcile the differences in percentiles for the same scaled score this way: Maybe vaibhavshah1 got more question wrong overall but was able to get a few more difficult (96%ile) questions correct than you... But because you got more questions overall correct and you got nearly every difficult (94%ile) question right so on balance you'd end up with the same scaled score... but then because he/she managed to get correct one or two more difficult ones than you she/he was given 96%ile...

does this make any sense?.... just a theory...

No, that is not likely. It is most likely what Dana said. The scores are consistently updated to reflect current percentile rankings. I also recieved 94% and got a 50Q.

What I really hope is people start getting bad at verbal, so my 78% will move up to 80% when they print the updated percentiles. And yes, your percentiles do change every year according to the GMAT percentile rankings. I do not wish bad at anybody on this site of course, but if eveyone else got a 12 on verbal, thats just fine by ME!

That explains why my quant %ile was lower than I expected... given the scaled score... people are getting better at quant...

maybe then my verbal can rise to >90% too

@zuleron: actually, it's the exact opposite... People are getting WORSE at quant, because vaibhavshah1's 50 was 96th percentile compared to my 50, which was 94th percentile. This means that, if we're correct, what would have been a 94th percentile score a month ago is now a 96th percentile (which is of course, better)...

vaibhavshah1, I hope you don't mind us discussing this in your thread... I know it might be sort of rude of us to discuss general stuff rather than just congratulate you wholeheartedly. I suppose that we should start a thread in the GMAT strategy section for this topic!

780 is pretty good. You should consider retaking it to get those last 20 points and really clear up any questions ad coms may have about your candidacy.

but hey there is something I noticed. You joined the forum on 2nd june, took the test on 4th June and you say that the questions on the forum helped you a lot. that means you have been reading the posts but did not even register..
