Question about diversity

by Naman » Fri May 29, 2009 7:23 am
Hi Stacy,

I would like to know if its in anyway useful to mention alternative sexual orientation along with an extremely conservative background, disturbed childhood, domestic violence etc and the ability to eventually counter these problems and turn out better than most other peers.

Thanks.

Dear Naman,

I usually discourage clients from revealing these types of personal information. However, if it can be used in an essay where you demonstrate overcoming obstacles to achieve a goal, then it might be fine. There is a fine line between giving too much personal information and using a few details to give the reader an idea of the obstacles you have overcome. If you decide to write about these parts of your background, be sure the essay is about achieving your goal and not so much about giving details on the obstacles.

Good luck,
Lisa
