Slope PS

by aj5105 » Tue May 26, 2009 11:08 am
If line L passes through point (m,n) and (-m,-n), where m and n are not 0, which of the following must be true?

I. The slope of L is positive.

II. The slope of L is negative.

III. L exactly passes through 2 quadrants.

LOL I think its III only

(m, n) can be (5,2) which makes (-m,-n) to be (-5,-2) which would be a positive slope

(m,n) could also be (5,-2) which makes (-m,-n) to be (-5,2) which would be a negative slope.

The only thing I see sticking around is III

Please correct me if I am wrong

Slope is n/m so the line is y =(n/m)x + b. plug in (m,n) and we get that b = 0.

So y = (n/m)x. Since neither n and m are non zero, it must pass through exactly two quadrants.

The answer is III.
