Hi,

I'm looking to apply to top business schools in the fall. I had a 4 year career in banking, and recently left because I was a finalist in a top nationwide business plan competition (although ultimately did not win the grand prize). I left because a) my boss found out about it and as a result did not think I was serious about banking, and b) I want to pursue my business plan.

However, as I've been working on this (and an entreprenurial venture a few friends are starting), I realize business school could be a great asset in helping me launch a company.

My problem: I cannot go to my old supervisor as I don't trust he would write me a glowing recommendation. And that is the only job I've had post-college.

I keep in touch with a few co-workers who would write me a good rec, but they were not my supervisors. Or I could have one of the friends I'm working on a business venture with now write me one. Would this be looked down upon in the admissions cycle?

Thanks!

It's definitely not ideal, but it is better than a weak letter from your old boss. Perhaps you have an advisor for your start up? Or someone who is senior to you that you worked with cross functionally at your old company?
