Greater Than vs More Than

by Mayur Sand » Tue May 19, 2009 6:18 pm
The gyrfalcon ,an arctic bird of prey , has survived a close brush with extinction ;its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's

a)extinction;its numbers are now five times greater than
b)extinction;its numbers are now five times more than
c)extinction , their numbers now fivefold what they were
d)extinction ,now with fivefold the numbers they had
e)extinction, now with numbers five times greater than

My confusion is btw (A) greater than &( B) more than , which is one preferred in what scenario

Greater than is used for numbers alone. More than will be suitable for comparsions.

however you say

"more than 100 beer".... so when you refer to the number of objects you say "more than" while when you talk about numbers alone you say "greater than"

MORE THAN is used for countable objects, whereas GREATER is used for uncountable objects such as numbers, density, etc
