Economy expansion

Hi All,

In the below question(OG-10, Q28), the OA is[spoiler] "E".[/spoiler]. OG gives the following reason for kicking out A, C and D.

A,C, D - incorrect - the that appearing after but creates a subordinate clause where an independent clause is needed for the new subject, mixed performance

Can somebody please help me understand the above explanation. Please tell how "that" creates the subordinate clause in the above case.

(D) suggests that the economy is continuing to expand into the coming months, but that

The first part of the sentence is a separate clause - X indicates that the economy will rise and the second part of the sentence is another clause - Y indicates that the economy will grow at a moderate pace.

"That" would make the second clause a part of the first clause or the subordinate clause..

consider this eg: "Transcripts show that John is Intelligent but the GMAT score shows that john is just average. "

If we add "that" "Transcripts show that John is Intelligent but that the GMAT score shows that john is just average. " the sentence would loose its sense. It would mean "Transcripts show that he is intelligent but transcripts show that the gmat shows that he is just average" - sounds garbage isn't it!!!

First, index is singular so you most definitely need to have the plural form suggests.
This eliminates A and B.

Second the usage of that violates the parallelism intended in the sentence.
There are two indicators, the rise of the index and the mixed performance of the index.
One suggests that and the other indicates that. By including another that in the middle, the sentence is made awkward and confusing.
This eliminates C and D.

You are left with E which is the correct option
