Help required

by hrushi_gmat » Tue May 05, 2009 6:59 am
Hi Lisa,
I am Hrushikesh from India.
I am in dilemma to appear for GMAT.
My profile is as follows
1. Graduate in Engineering (Advanced physics)
2. 9 Yrs of experience (mostly in India)
3. Role - Individual contributor + Team member

Do you think going for full time MBA will help me in short time?
Is it also worth to consider 1 year MBA programs versus traditional 2 years programs?
Is it also safe to quit the job and join MBA in this recession time?
Which colleges in USA are good for my profile?

Thanks in advance

Dear Hrushikesh,

I cannot answer your questions without knowing more information. Most of the answers depend on what your career goals are and what you desire in a business school in terms of curriculum, resources, and culture. Likewise, I do not have enough information on your profile to comment regarding your chances at any school. I would suggest you spend some time researching business school and determining your rationale for getting a MBA in relation to your career goals. Once you know why you want to go to business school and where you want to be when you finish, then it will be easier for you to identify appropriate schools for you.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, Thanks for the feedback and I apologize to send very short information about my profile. I want to go for a MBA program to acquire managerial and leadership skills. I want to improve on my strategic skills. I want to add new skills on foundation my work experience. I also think that MBA program will help to move up in career ladder quickly. I also intend to work in USA. My experience is in R&D in semiconductor companies. These companies are mainly located in USA.So I want to widen the horizon of work opportunities other than semiconductor industry.
Is this information sufficient for you to see whats the best program for me and which schools/college I should target for?
What can be the best time to take GMAT and how much is minimum score required?
I know too many questions

:D
Thanks
Hrushikesh

Hrushikesh,

Those are all legitimate reasons to go to business school, but you need to have determined your career goals with more specificity to really identify appropriate schools. For instance, what industry and what functional area? where do you want to be geographically? You should spend time researching careers after business school and what you think is the best fit for you.

As for the GMAT, I would suggest taking it sooner rather than later since most people take it at least twice. You need to give yourself time to prepare though. To be competitive for any school, you will need to score in the 700s. To gauge your competitiveness for a particular school, you want your GMAT to be at or above the average.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa,
I will certainly spend some time researching for the schools.
I am looking for a managerial position in an IT firm from USA/Canada.
I am looking for a course for general business management (not specialized in HR. marketing kind of) My expectations from the course are to provide sound business knowledge, get new skills to handle diffrent situations, to become dynamic leader.
My budget for the course is limited. (less than 30K USD)
The school should have good placement record.
