Word translations!!! Help!!

by ramonsa » Sat May 02, 2009 9:23 am
Hello,

Can someone explain me what is the best approach to solve this problem?

Andrew will be half as old as Larry in 3 years. Andrew will also be one third as old as Jerome in 5 years. If Jerome is 15 years older than Larry, How old is Andrew?

Thanks
Ramon

Just write down your equations:

A + 3 = (L + 3)/2

A + 5 = (J + 5)/3

J = L + 15

Substitute the last equation in the second one to get:

A + 5 = (L + 20)/3

A + 5 = A + 3 + 2 = (L + 3)/2 + 2 = (L + 20)/3 - solve this last one to get L = 19, meaning that A will be 8.
