33 Days to the GMAT

by kranti » Sat Apr 18, 2009 3:08 pm
Friends, I have 33 days left to GMAT, so I plan to blog my progress and the lessons that I learn during these 33 days.

My preparation started 3 months back; the biggest problem during my preparation is the no. of breaks due to travel and work. I think continuity is very important, every time after a break I had to spend 2 to 3 days to get back to the GMAT state(?) I was in before the break.

Please provide any input that you think can help me.

My current status:
-> Solved all math in KAPLAN800
-> Solved 80% of Math and 90% Verbal in OG10
-> Solved 100% of OG9

CAT Scores so far:

Mar 10: GMAT PowerPrep1 - 680 (over 2 days)
-> This was my first CAT and I simply couldn't sit for 150 mins. I ended up taking math and verbal on separate days.

Mar 16: Kaplan Test1 - 610 - M 40 V 33
-> Managed to take both sections in one sitting this time

Apr 6: PR Test1 - 690 - M 48 V 38
-> This was my score on a retake. PR software is buggy, it concluded after the math section without taking me to the verbal section. So I had to take two sessions separately before taking them together.

Apr 10: PR Test2 - 640 - M 51 V 27
-> This is where things started to shake me a little bit, my verbal score was below par.

Apr 14: PR Test4 - 650 - M 51 V 30
-> Bad verbal score continued. I committed unacceptable no. of errors in RC. Penalized for wrong answers in the initial questions.

Apr 18: PR Test2 - Verbal only - V 29
-> It is getting from bad to worse, my verbal score is dipping.

Analysis:
-> As my scores reflect, I seem to feel at home with Math and struggle with verbal. Reviews tell me that I am getting my basics wrong in verbal.
-> I would like to say a thing or two about PR Tests, I read somewhere that the penalty for getting initial questions wrong is heavy; and it turned out to be true in my case.

Details:
Timing: I am finding it hard to keep up with the pace. I am ending up guessing the answers in the last few mins.

RC:
Error: Wrong answer selection for Inference questions. Did not go back to passage to verify the inference
Lesson: Go back to passage and find support for the inference

CR: Basics wrong.
Error: I am not making the premise and conclusion clear to myself. As a result, I am opting for choices which support premise when asked for conclusion and vice-versa.
Lesson: Clearly understand what the premise is and what the conclusion of the argument is.

Error: Weak in question types - "What is the purpose of bolded phrase in the argument above". Most answer choices appear correct to me.
Lesson: Practice more questions of this type and prepare flash cards with the strategy

Error: Unknowingly making additional assumptions
Lesson: Do not make any additional assumptions other than the ones implied in the argument

Error: Sometimes all answer choices appear to be incorrect to me and I seem to get lost in such situations
Lesson: When all answer choices appear incorrect, go back to choices and read them again to make sure that you understand them clearly

SC:
Error: Verb-tenses wrong. I learnt during my preparation to avoid "-ing" forms as much as possible. I am completely avoiding "-ing" forms in the answer choices, which seems to be an overkill.
Lesson: Not all "-ing" forms are wrong. Choose an answer choice even if the answer has "ing" form as long as it is parallel and merits over other answer choices

-> I am going back to the books to revisit my basics and not to repeat the mistakes again. I will update my progress soon, meanwhile any suggestions are most welcome. Thanks!

Your practise tests should mimic the timings of the real GMAT as much as possible. The real thing is a bit of an endurance sport.

Remember, you write essays for an hour --> Optional Break --> 75 minutes of Quantitative --> Optional Break --> 75 minutes of Verbal.

You only get 10 min breaks, and I would not recommend getting out for more than 5 because then you get paranoid about incurring a penalty if it takes a while to check you back in. HOWEVER, even if the breaks aren't long, it gives you a moment to stretch and stop staring at that computer screen!

Also, don't be shy about it. I skipped my second break because the whole process with the palm scanning and all seemed a little silly. This was a mistake and I got a little tired/thirsty in the verbal section.

Hi Kranti,

Thanks for sharing your progress with us. Not to put a swerveball in now(32 days before your big day!), but did you not use OG11 or better still the new OG guide (12th addition)? Seems like you used the older versions (OG9 and OG10) from your post?

The CAT tests you are using, are they the blue downloadable ones from MBA.com?

Great scores btw! I am sure you will do very well!

Hey Kranti,
Just saw your post! Great progress! I wanted to know if you had a Quant / Maths background, hence your high scores in Quant or can you advise us how you improved your Quant scores?

32 days left

Thanks for the suggestions.
Good point about endurance. I guess it can be rightly called GMATathon.

About OG11, I did look into it. I think OG10 is like superset of OG11 and so it has more questions for practice.
However OG11 has much better explanation.

I do have little bit of Math background (gained from Apt tests take in the past) which hopefully will come handy on the G day.
I liked the Math part in Kaplan800, it has excellent strategies for different math questions. I would definitely recommend that.

32 days left:

I went back to books and re-did my basics. Did some practice questions and tried to correct myself.

My RC strike rate got better, but CR and SC still have a lot of room for improvement.

Error: Ignoring new/additional errors in the answer choice which is fixing the error in the actual statement.
Lesson: When choosing an answer, make sure that the answer choice is not introducing new errors (particularly in idioms and parallel constructions)

Error: Verb-tenses mistake in answer choices which include have been,
had been, were

Lesson: Choose a verb tense which agrees with the tenses in the remaining part of the argument

31 days to GMAT

Downloaded a timer application to time the practice https://www.nestersoft.com/timeleft/
It is a free tool and seems pretty useful, we can custom set the count down timer to 75 mins.

Retook PR GMAT Test #4 - V:42 M:51 T:740
- I know this is inflated score because it is a retake
- Math was easy and most questions repeated from previous tests
- In verbal, 16 questions repeated and 25 questions were new
- Totally 8 questions were answered wrongly in Verbal: RC-5; CR-2; SC-1

- PR CAT Tests have another defect. A long passage is followed by just only one question about that passage, this means that we end up spending 6 mins in answering just one question

- Anyways, I am done with PR and plan to move on to MGMAT
- Continued working on verbal, especially RC. Read different threads for RC tips.
- New lessons learnt during practice

RC:
Error: According to Author vs. According to Passage questions. Not understanding what the question is actually asking for?
Lesson: A passage may have both Author’s view and General view. Understand exactly what the question is about, is it asking about Author’s view? Or is it asking about General view? Answer choices will usually have both views to entice you into making mistake

Error: Main idea of the passage
Lesson: Always, always, always remember to read beginning and ending lines of a passage whenever you see main idea/purpose question.

Error: Specific questions in different wording (synonym)
Lesson: Wordings may be different in answer choice and in the passage. Verify if the wordings mean the same before choosing the second best choice in POE

Error: Choosing answer choice which has information not mentioned in the passage
Lesson: Always remember to disregard the answer choice which has information not mentioned in the passage, choose the second best choice in POE even if you don’t understand in completely
