x^4 - 10x^2 + 9
=> x^4-9x^2-x^2+9
=>x^2(x^2-9)-1(x^2-9)
=>(x^2-9)(x^2-1)
=>(x+3)(x-3)(x+1)(x-1)

You can factor it into (x^2 - 9) ( x^2 -1).
Then-->
(x -3)(x+3)(x-1)(x+1)
The more you look, the more you see.
