Is x - y + 1 greater than x + y - 1?

(1) x > 0.

(2) y < 0.

From question stem

x-y+1>x+y-1

cancel x

-2y>-2

y<1

thus if we can prove that y<1 , we can prove the inequality

statement 1

x>0... insufficient. we have no knowledge of y

statement 2

y<0...sufficient. because if y<0 it is obv <1

sufficient
