720 - did i beat the gmat or did it beat me?

Hi All,

I've been reading this forum quite regularly for the past few days, but haven't posted yet - was waiting to take the GMAT! Well, the d-day was today and I scored 720 (Q49, V40). Honestly, I'm a trifle disappointed and am not sure who beat whom!

Here's my profile:
I'm 28, with 5 years of workex in banking (top MNC banking giant).

Target schools: INSEAD, Wharton, IMD, GSB

At least that's what I was planning to target - but I'm not sure whether my score is good enough.

I'll post my detailed experience soon with tips which can help other test takers.

Also, would like to acknowledge that posts of Stuart Kovinski and Mayonnaise on this forum are great and helped me a lot!

Congratulations for beating the gmat!!!

I have no idea why you are disappointed with a score of 720.. With 720 you can get into any business school in the world accepting GMAT, assuming your application is strong.

If i were you I'd stop worrying about the GMAT and be happy with the 720, and focus on the other important parts of the application like the essays, Reco letters etc.

You should consider taking the exam again and also ask GMAC to transfer your score to my name!

Based on what I've read about MBA admissions, getting a 720 on the GMAT means that the test is no longer an issue. A 720 is more than adequate for any MBA program in the world. The real question now is what other assets you bring to the table in the admissions game.

As other posters here indicate, many individuals with GMAT scores of 780 get dinged by top MBA programs, while others with scores of 680 are admitted.

It sounds like you are not very confident with the rest of your application. Did you check the average GMAT score of the student body at INSEAD, Wharton, IMD, GSB ?

Do you think 720 falls below their GMAT average ?

YES IT IS. (BY 11 POINTS AT WHARTON AND I BET BY 20 POINTS AT INSEAD)

HOW CAN ANYONE HAVE THE GUMPTION TO QUESTION WHETHER THEY BEAT THE GMAT OR THE GMAT BEAT THEM WITH A SCORE OF 720.

I MEAN IF YOUR GOAL IS TO GET A PERFECT SCORE THEN YOU GOT BEAT.

BUT IF YOU THINK THAT A SCORE OVER 90% IS A DEFEAT, YOU MUST BE A PERFECTIONIST OR OVERLY ANAL OVERACHIEVER.

THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO EXPLAIN IT.
