Deferral to top school (HSW)

by mohan82 » Sun Apr 05, 2009 1:06 am
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for your regular effort on these forums helping out everyone. Reading your advice has helped me greatly along this process. A new advancement in my story prompts me to ask you again for some advice.

My company has recently taken off and acquired some venture capital. Due to this (very exciting) advancement I feel compelled to defer my admission to HSW till next year.

My questions for you:
- How do you feel my chances are of getting a deferral, given that it is a non-personal reason?
- Any tips on the best approach to explain this situation? I feel this experience will only enhance my business school experience in the future.
- Is it necessary to talk to someone (via phone or meeting) or is a letter sufficient to explain?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Dear Mohan,

Schools vary on what they will grant deferrals for, but generally speaking, most schools do not grant deferrals for professional reasons. Deferrals are usually for cases of personal or family illness and military service. There are some schools that will grant deferrals for cases like yours; however, I'm not sure Wharton is one of them. I would suggest talking with the admissions director or an assistant/associate director sooner rather than later regarding your dilemma. It is unlikely that it will matter you mentioned your business in your interview, but it might help.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks lisa. One follow up question is, if I am denied deferral, would you think I have a high chance of success as a reapplicant next year? Do schools give preference to candidates who were accepted in the previous years?

Turning down an offer of admission will not increase your chances of being admitted the subsequent year. If anything, you will need to make a case for why you are prepared to enter business school the second time around. I strongly encourage you to discuss your situation with Wharton to get the best perspective on your situation.

Regards,
Lisa
