MY GMAT DRAMA

by vijshinde29 » Wed Apr 01, 2009 4:03 am
HERE IS MY GMAT DRAMA

ON THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM I WAS JUST ABOUT TO GO TO BED AND LOGGED IN ON MBA.COM WEBSITE AND NOTICED THAT MY DOB ON MY PROFILE WAS WRONG........I GOT PANICKED..........I SENT EMAIL TO GMAT CUSTOMER SERVICE..LEFT VOICE MESSAGES ...I COULD NOT SLEEP WHOLE NIGHT THINKING THAT GMAT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO TAKE THE TEST....I DID NOT SLEEP WHOLE NIGHT...

I WENT FOR MY TEST IN A MINDSET THAT I HAVE TO RESCHEDULE MY EXAM DUE TO PROFILE ERROR.GMAT ALLOWED ME TO TAKE THE TEST.

I STARTED MY TEST WITH COOL MIND..COMPLETED ESSAYS AND STARTED MY QUANT SECTION..I GOT PANICKED AND I WAS UNABLE TO CONCENTRATE ON MY EXAM...I AM VERY GOOD AT MATH BUT I COULD NOT ANY SIMPLE MULTIPLICATION OR COULD NOT READ PROBLEMS ON THE SCREEN.I THOUGHT SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE EXAM TO QUIT BUT I COMPLETED THE EXAM..

IN THE END I SCORED 540(Q37,V27) .......580 SHOULD HAVE WORKED ..

I AM PLANNING TO RETAKE THE EXAM AGAIN ON MAY 1ST... I NEED SCORE IN 600'S...

AT THIS TIME I AM DISAPPOINTED , DEJECTED,DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AND DON'T KNOW HOW DO I START MY PREPARATION AGAIN...

I WORKED HARD FOR LAST 3 MONTHS AND PANICKED IN THE END....
AND I HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN

ANY COMMENTS,ANY ADVICE WILL BE HELPFUL.

I AM LOOKING AT ALL OF YOU FOR SUPPORT .....

VIJAY

Please provide us with some more details on how you went about prepping for the last 3 months. It's hard to offer clear advice based on your post.

It sounds like you had some bad luck but you can definitely bounce back. I understand that it's painful when you truly tried your best and had an unfavorable outcome.

First things first, take a few days off to clear your head and wipe the slate clean. It sounds like you were studying intensely for 3 months so take some time to put this in the past and re-focus.

Next, create a plan for addressing your weaknesses. How did you study over the past 3 months? What resources did you use? How many practice CATs did you take? Now that you've taken the test you probably have some more insight into how you can improve the quality of your study time.

Once you have a plan in place and have a new strategy/approach, stay focused and execute. Succeeding on the GMAT is about building confidence in your ability to take the test. I felt almost sick when I took the GMAT but because my mind was programmed to do the test I was still able to succeed at reaching my goal.

canada_sms,

Thanks for the reply.

Here is what I did for last 3 months

I studied all my resources mentioned below and practiced under timed condition.I solved as many questions I could on various topics.I prepared my own flash cards and studied them REGULARY.

AT THIS POINT I CAN'T THINK OF ANY TOPIC IN MY HEAD THAT I NEED TO WORK ON..I COULD EVEN SOLVE PROBABILITY,RATE,WORK AND COORDINATED GEOMETRY SECTION EASILY.

I WORKED EXTENSIVLY ON RC,CR AND SC SECTIONS.

IF I TAKE GMAT TEST AT THIS MOMENT I BELIVE I COULD EASILY SCORE OVER 600 BUT I COULDN'T DO IT YESTERDAY AND THAT'S THE FACT OF MY LIFE..

I REALLY NEED HELP TO FORMULATE A PLAN FOR A MONTH.

any suggetion any help is greatly appreciated...I need to keep my tempo for a month and stop thinking what went wrong yesterday.

RESOURCES
OG-11
OG-VERBAL-REVIEW
OG-MATH-REVIEW

MGMAT-SC
MGMAT-WORD PROBLEMS

PRACTICE TESTS

MGMAT 1-4. I scored consistently around 600-640
gmat prep 1 - 560
gmat prep 2 - 590

If I were you I would get my hands on some more practice CATs and do 2-3 of those a week. You still have a lot of room for improvement on both your quant and your verbal score. You mentioned how you can solve probability, work/rate and coordinate geometry problems but your practice cat results indicate that you're not at a point where you're going to see such killer questions. You might be better served by mastering some of the basics like number properties, inequalities, etc. Doing this will help you get out of the mid-tier bins and into the upper quant bins.

I'm glad you've taken some Manhattan CATs. What's more important than the scores are the ANALYTICS that you can get from MHAT. What are your weak areas according to those assessment reports? Any question type that you are frequently getting incorrect should be focused on and drilled. For example, I took the first 4 MHAT cats and was consistently getting boldface CR questions wrong. I think my success rate was maybe 20%. I spent one evening reviewing strategy for boldface CR in detail to address this weakness and then I started to see improvement. Basically you need to kill the cancer cells one by one.

I used MGMAT extensivly because I liked anylysis.I did review my test results and noticed that initially I was weak on inequality and mod || questions.I also worked on CR questions related to inference, bold face qustion type.

Do you recommend taking any other practice tests from veritas/kaplan or any other?

I do kind of remeber all the questions and answers from OG.No point doing those questions again for now I might do them may be after few weeks.

I am thinking going thro' MGMAT stratergy guide one by one again
and take practice tests every week to keep me alert.

Do you recommend KAPLAN MATH review book ?

More over,I need to analyze what went wrong..I over analyzed the test ..and concluded in first few minutes that I was doing bad..

well, its time to stop whining and get back to study..
