Use of Participle and Infinitive

What is the difference between "ability to raise" and "ability in raising"?

When should we use an infinitive and a participle.

My experience with GMAT the 1st one is always preferable, I believe is gramatically better and "ability in raising" can even be redundant. Any grammar gurus out there?

I would definitely not consider myself a grammarian of any kind but I think this is an issue in idioms:

I have the ability to speak to dogs-ability to do some kind of action
I have ability in communicating with animals-ability in should be followed by a noun
