Main thing to understand here is that the modern critics are amused by the the scholar's categorizing and not by the early scholars themselves. So you can strike off options C D and E (the use of 's after scholar is important here to show what amused the critics)

Only option A & B refer to scholar's categorizing

Option B changes the meaning by using 'as if'

Hence option A seems right IMO

I read somewhere that pronoun should never be used directly after the noun it refers to..so D & E are wrong.
In A & B possessive form is not required.

IMO A Possesive + Gerund for people is ok
The meaning of the sentence is that critics are amused by the categorization itself not by the scholars who categorize. Besides if the sentence mentions early scholars categorize can not be in simple present.
