GMATprep DS - congress

by jayhawk2001 » Sat Jun 09, 2007 3:55 pm
10 points for the answer with the least number of steps :-). OA after
a few reply.

Six countries in a certain region sent a total of 75 representatives to an international congress, and no two countries sent the same number of representatives. Of the six countries, if country A sent the
second greatest number of representatives, did country A
send at least 10 representatives?

(1) One of the six countries sent 41 representatives to the congress

(2) Country A sent fewer than 12 representatives to the congress

Just my CALL..

IMO A

Country A B C D E F

Reps 41 1 2 3 4 34

Since 1 country sends 41 members, and A sends the maximum number of members..its has to be A who sends 41 members..if we keep the lowest most number of reps for other countries.

B option is ruled out..since if A sends 11 members (Max) total number of members would be 11+10+9+8+7+6 not equal to 75

I missed an important datapoint while typing the question :-(. A actually
has the second greatest number of rep.

I've modified my original post to indicate this. Please give it a shot with
the modified question.

Let me try

Is the answer E?

(1) says one of the six countries sent 41 reps. This does not say how much A had sent. It could be more than 10 or less than 10. For the remaining 5 countries we could have say 11(A), 8,7,5,3 or 9(A),8,7,6,4. Hence not sufficient.

(2) says A had sent fewer than 12 reps. Again one could assume the numbers as in (1).
