Timeline for Accepting Offers

by fonzy1324 » Sun Mar 08, 2009 2:59 pm
How long do top schools typically give you to accept their offer of admission?

I ask this because I applied to Columbia about a week ago. I hear from the other 4 schools that I applied to later this month or early April. I likely won't get a final decision from Columbia until sometime in May. I'm assuming if I get accepted to any of the other 4 schools, I will need to let them know within a month (end of April-early May).

If I put down a deposit at another school, but find out later that I got into Columbia and want to go there instead, does the original school get upset? Or is it fairly standard and they would just offer my spot to someone on the waitlist? I'm assuming either way that the deposit is non-refundable, I just wanted to make sure it's not too big a deal to go about it this way.

Thanks,
Scott

You might want to contact the school directly, but I believe its a few weeks. Usually the deadline is after the school's official 'Sell Week', so that you have the opportunity to visit the school and be 'sold' on the program!
